Context of the PPWR law: Towards a reduction of single-use plastic packaging.
The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) law, introduced by the European Union, aims to drastically reduce the use of single-use plastic packaging and promote recyclable or biodegradable materials. Starting in 2025, these rules will require actors in the fruit and vegetable sector to adopt eco-friendly packaging solutions, minimizing their environmental impact as much as possible. This directly affects products like avocados, nectarines, and many others, often sold in plastic trays.
These new requirements, though necessary for the planet, require rapid adaptation from producers, distributors, and manufacturers. Packaging will need to be made from recycled, compostable, or biodegradable materials while ensuring product quality, preservation, and safety.
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which came into effect on February 11, 2025, introduces specific measures regarding trays for fruits. Notably, starting January 1, 2030, the use of single-use plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables sold in portions of less than 1.5 kg will be banned, with certain exceptions to be determined.
This ban aims to reduce plastic waste and encourage the use of more sustainable alternatives for packaging fresh products.
